The Echo Protocol

AN EXCERPT:

At 11:29 a.m., she’s standing in front of a building she’s never noticed before.

Which is strange—because it’s impossible to miss.

Glass. Steel. Minimal signage. Set back just enough to feel separate.

A brushed-metal plaque:

AXIOM

No tagline. No explanation.

Clean. Controlled.

Kira studies it.

Then checks her phone again.

Nothing else. No contact. No agenda.

Just the assumption she’ll show up.

A flicker of irritation.

She doesn’t like assumptions.

Still—

She steps inside.

***

The lobby is quiet. Too quiet.

No reception desk. No staff. Just a corridor and a single chair, placed with intention.

“Hello?”

Her voice carries—then disappears.

A door opens.

A man steps out. Mid-forties. Neutral. Immaculate suit. Designed not to stand out.

And yet—

“Ms. Morgan,” he says.

Not a question.

Kira studies him.

“That depends,” she says. “Who’s asking?”  A faint smile.

“Axiom Behavioral. Thank you for coming.”

“I didn’t confirm.”

“No,” he agrees. “But you’re here.” A beat.

He gestures toward the door.

“Shall we?”

Kira doesn’t move.

Something about the space feels… decided.

Like the outcome already exists.

She doesn’t like that.

But curiosity wins.

It always does.

Kira steps forward.

“I have other meetings,” she says. “Let’s make this quick.”    The man inclines his head.

“I don’t think that will be possible.”
